The industry is changing. A look at what’s new in 2017.

The motorcycle market is changing and there are some interesting developments in 2017. European, Japanese and American manufacturers are returning to the roots of the motorcycling experience, celebrating naked styling or off-road exploring, but with all the advantages of sophisticated electronics and modern technology. While supersports are being upgraded with developments from MotoGP and World Superbike competition, the segment appears to be less of a focus than the mid-range market, with an impressive array of choices for consumers who want lots of usable power and touring options for public roads.  Entry models are also multiplying, with lots of options for new riders or commuters looking for light motorcyces with small engines and great fuel efficiency.

In the cruiser category, Harley-Davidson continues its march with its loyal devotees, while Indian Motorcycle enjoys a resurgence. Victory prepares to leave the market as Triumph and even Moto Guzzi join the Japanese manufacturers with tantalizing alternatives in this segment.

I visited the annual Greater Vancouver Motorcycle show in Abbotsford, British Columbia, and spent happy hours looking at all the new models.  It’s wonderful to compare so many bikes by sitting on them and acquiring tactile familiarity with their design.

The show was very well attended, including dozens of motorcyclists who rode in the cold weather and were rewarded with free parking.

I collected some images and basic info that I’ve compiled in this short video project.
